Sarong with Ya Marn pattern, the whisper of love

        At Phumin temple, one of the important temples in Nan city, there is a very famous wall painting art, telling stories of the Jataka and Nan people’s ways of life in the past. It was painted during 1867-1874. The most famous image is the painting of a couple; the man is whispering something to the woman and naturally embracing her. It is known as "the portrait of Pu Marn Ya Marn" or "whispering man". The word “Marn” is used for calling people of Burmese descent whereas “Pu” and “Ya” (actually pronounced Nga) are words for adult men and women in Lanna language, not old men and women at all. The painting is regarded as the most complete in composition and emotion as a symbol of love. It is known world-wide and has become one of the tourist attractions of Nan province.

       In the painting “Ya Marn” dresses in the Tai Lue style, which Mr. Korakot Pangjai who studied Ya Marn’s sarong pattern and produced a duplicated sarong. It later becomes the unique pattern for fabric in Ban Sao Luang weaving mill. The “Ya Marn”-pattern sarong has amazed everyone who see it since the design still looks trendy and fashionable in the modern world.
