Pai Si Suk (ไผ่สีสุก Bambusa Blumeana) : The Key to the Durable Sangkhalok

บรรยายนำชม

From time memorandum, artisans in ancient Sukhothai learned how to make a great use of the prevalent Bambusa blumeana by turning the natural material into the main source for firing in the production of Sangkhalok. This particular variety of bamboo which grows in abundance along the banks of Yom River, could generate extremely high temperature up to 900 C degrees.

The inferno from the bamboo inadvertently imparted a deep crackle-texture to the ceramic wares, that have ultimately become a signature style of Sangkhalok pottery. On the downside, the immense blaze was also responsible for speeding up the deterioration of the klins. But apparently it did not seem to pose any problem for the artisans, for they would build another one top of the wrecked furnaces.
